This works for any rep range. An RPE 7 triple that used to feel like RPE 9 predicts a heavier triple or a fast single. An RPE 8 single that used to feel like RPE 10 predicts a heavier single. Using Rep PRs to Predict Max PRs
A rep PR at sub-maximal weight almost always precedes a max PR. If you hit 275x8 on squat when your previous best was 275x6, your 1RM has increased by roughly 5-10%. Your logbook captures rep PRs more frequently than max PRs and gives you earlier signals of strength gains.
Log every rep PR in your training journal with a clear mark. Circle the weight and reps, write 'Rep PR' in the margin, and date it. Over months, you will see a pattern: rep PRs cluster in the 2-3 weeks before a max PR. The rep PR is the warning signal that a max is coming.

Add a warm-up quality note to every session. Two words: 'Empty bar: fast/slow. 50%: snappy/dragging.' After 3-4 sessions, you will see the correlation between warm-up feel and session performance. A fast empty bar and snappy 50% sets predict a strong working session and a potential PR.
When your warm-up bar speed feels low — the bar moves slower than normal, positions feel unstable, you need extra concentration — your CNS is not ready for maximal loading. Drop the intensity target for the session to 80-85% and focus on volume or technique. The PR will still be there next week.

Combine your three data signals into a single PR readiness score: 0-3. One point for a downward RPE trend at working weight. One point for a rep PR within the last 2 weeks. One point for a fast warm-up on the day of the attempt. A score of 3 means go for the PR. A score of 2 means attempt but set a conservative target. A score of 1 or 0 means push the attempt back.
Write your readiness score at the top of your session page before you touch a barbell. It forces you to look at the data before you make decisions based on feelings. Feelings are unreliable — your logbook is not.
Review your readiness scores vs. actual outcomes quarterly. Did you hit 90%+ of your PR attempts when the score was 3? Did you miss most attempts at score 1? The data validates the system or tells you to adjust it. Logbook systems should themselves be tracked.
